Port Logistics Controller

SCOPE OF WORK

A mid-tier mining group is looking to recruit a dynamic, well-experienced Port Logistics Controller to join the team.  The successful incumbent will be based in Richards Bay, KZN.

COAL INVENTORY CONTROL

  • Manage coal stock levels across mines, stockpiles, third-party warehouses, and ports with a focus on accuracy and traceability.

  • Perform daily coal inventory reconciliations and resolve variances to maintain high levels of data integrity.

  • Oversee the efficient flow of coal from production through to export, including rail, road, and port logistics.

  • Maintain up-to-date inventory systems and reports for internal stakeholders and regulatory audits.

COAL QUALUTY CONTROL

  • Monitor and ensure compliance with coal quality specifications including ash content, moisture, and calorific value.

  • Oversee sampling and analysis procedures at key stages (mine, port, vessel loading) to prevent degradation or contamination.

  • Implement and maintain coal handling procedures to protect product quality throughout storage and transport.

  • Liaise with laboratories, operations teams, and shipping agents to ensure product delivered meets customer contracts.

 TEAM & SUBORDINATE MANAGEMENT

  • Manage, supervise, and mentor a team of inventory clerks, logistics coordinators, and site personnel.

  • Oversee export documentation, permits, and compliance with customs and transport regulations.

  • Allocate daily tasks, monitor performance, and provide training to ensure operational excellence.

  • Promote a culture of accountability, safety, and continuous improvement within the team.

  • Conduct performance reviews and enforce company policies and procedures among staff.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL

  • Implement and monitor environmental control protocols during coal handling, storage, and transportation.

  • Ensure adherence to environmental regulations and minimize dust, runoff, and contamination risks.

LOGISTICS COORDINATION & COMPLIANCE

  • Coordinate inbound and outbound coal logistics, ensuring on-time delivery and efficient loading at rail, road, and port facilities.

  • Collaborate with Transnet, third-party transport providers, and port authorities to streamline operations.

  • Oversee export documentation, permits, and compliance with customs and transport regulations.

  • Support business improvement initiatives to enhance logistics, inventory turnover, and cost control.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, ATTRIBUTES AND EXPERIENCE

  • Logistics/Supply Chain Degree or similar qualification

  • At least 5 years cargo and stockpile management experience at a port.

  • Must be computer literate, excellent Excel skills advantageous.

  • Good writing, reporting and verbal communication skills. 

  • Ability to meet deadlines.

  • Must be willing to travel and have a valid driver’s license.

  • Must be willing to travel to port after hours on and as and when required basis.  Furthermore,  must be willing to travel to others ports in South Africa and Maputo.
