Springlake Colliery

Springlake Colliery is a South African-based anthracite mine located in Dannhauser, KwaZulu-Natal, approximately 45 kilometres from Newcastle.

Springlake is an underground operation with a monthly production output of approximately 60,000 tonnes of run-of-mine anthracite. It employs 295 people, excluding contractors.

The mine has been in operation since 1978 but was only recently acquired by the Menar Group. This strategic asset builds on the Group’s existing anthracite mining track record, which spans nearly a decade. Springlake yields a niche product with qualities different from the company’s existing operations and is suitable for the export markets. The product is ideal for various metallurgical processes, such as in blast furnaces for steel manufacturing and the production of ferroalloys and silicon-manganese, among other vital industries.
