Journalists get training to deepen mining insight

Training sessions attended by more than 20 media professionals

Mining Journalism Training

Menar concluded a successful second instalment of the Mining Journalism Training program on the 22nd of October 2018, at the Turbine Hall in Johannesburg with a site visit to an operating mine, Phalanndwa Colliery in Delmas, which was scheduled for the 23rd of October 2018.

The training had 20 attendees from various institutions such as SABC news, Reuters, Tiso Blackstar, City Press newspaper, Mining Review Africa, SABC TV news, SABC Channel Africa, Mpumalanga Press, University of the Witwatersrand, SARB, Help2Read (NPO) and Civil Society Organisations Extractive Industries Technical Group Monthly magazine called CSO-EITI Bulletin seeking in-depth knowledge of the mining economy. Menar Academy brought together the mining experts and senior journalists to train for mining journalism.

The training was moderated by Jacques DeBie and opened by Vuslat Bayoglu, the attendees had the opportunity to listen the lectures of Setepane Mohale from the Department of Mineral Resources, Mzukisi Qobo, Dr Salimah Valiani, Sikonathi Mantshantsha, Lili Nupen, Charlotte Matthews and Peter Major. The speakers were gifted with a donation to Qhubeka in their names by Menar as their honorarium and with these donations 6 children now have their bicycles to use to get to school.
