SOUTH AFRICA: CANYON COAL OPENS A NEW COAL MINE IN GAUTENG

The mining company Canyon Coal opened its new Khanye coal mine in Bronkhorstspruit, Gauteng province, on Friday, in the presence of South African Minister of Mineral Resources Gwede Mantashe.

The Khanye mine is home to a 39 million tonne coal reserve and is expected to produce 2.8 million tonnes of coal per year over a 16-year mine life.

Canyon is increasing production to 10 million tonnes per year, with five new open pit mines and two underground mines expected to come on line in the next few years.

According to Rudzani Mudogwa, a company executive relayed by Mining Weekly , the De Wittekrans mine, which will produce 4.8 million tonnes of coal a year, is expected to open this quarter, along with Witfontein and Extension.

Canyon Coal annually reserves 2.6 million tonnes of coal for export.
